Energy Efficiency Rating

In order for the government to reach their target of reducing domestic carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 they must be able to identify what homes are lacking adequate energy efficiency.

For the energy efficiency rating of a building to be established a domestic energy assessor (DEA) must attend a property and conduct a survey. DEA’s will look in a variety of places that might affect a properties energy efficiency rating, such as loft insulation, boilers, hot water tanks and windows.

The energy efficiency rating of a building is calculated by inputting the results of the survey into a software program that uses complex formulae. The result of the survey and subsequent calculations forms an EPC. An EPC contains details on the energy efficiency of a building, estimated bills and potential bills after improvements.

An Energy efficiency rating can range from A, being the best, to G. Properties that have a rating of F or lower are encouraged to improve their energy efficiency rating through energy efficiency measures.

Identifying the energy efficiency of a property is essential for not only reducing carbon emissions but allowing consumers, who are becoming more conscious to climate change, to establish their properties environmental impact.
