Loft Insulation

Loft insulation is one of, if not the, most readily available energy efficiency measures. The first energy efficiency measure installed in homes is usually loft insulation.

There are three different types of loft insulation available, they are, quilts, blown insulation and boards. Quilts are usually formed of mineral wool or natural wool and are laid down between the floor beams of the loft also known as joists. Quilts are preferred over other forms of loft insulation as they are usually environmentally friendly.

Blown insulation consists of mineral wool and cellulose. This type of insulation is blown loosely into the required area. Blown Insulation usually requires that an area within the loft be sectioned off and it is blown to the required depth. The main advantage of using blown insulation in lofts is its resistance to fire.

Boards are produced using expanded or extruded polystyrene. Boards are generally used in the insulation of a roof. Expanded polystyrene is polystyrene that has been expanded into a foam. Extruded polystyrene is similar, though has better insulation properties.

In order to get the best from loft insulation it is recommended that only insulation carrying the Energy Saving Trust Recommended logo be installed. Loft insulation products bearing this logo have met stringent standards, set by an independent body and are reviewed on a yearly basis.
