PAT Test
A PAT test, also known as portable appliance testing, is the process of checking an electrical portable appliance and ensuring it is safe to use. A PAT test usually involves a tester inspecting an appliances power cord and plug for any damage or anomalies. The appliance is then plugged into a PAT test machine that analyses the internal components and determines whether the appliance is safe or hazardous.
There are a number of regulations in place enforcing electrical safety. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994 for example requires that all landlords conduct PAT testing on all appliances that draw their power from the mains supply. Employers are also required under many regulations to conduct safety tests, usually in the form of PAT testing, on all appliances that are repaired or serviced, leased or supplied or that are going to make contact with employees or members of the public.
A PAT test can be conducted either in-house or by an external company. It is recommended that unless you have a qualified PAT tester an external company conduct the PAT test. External companies that are dedicated to PAT test will also have machines only operable by those qualified. These machines will be able to conduct tests that basic PAT test machines would not be able to do such as lead polarity, fuse test and earth leakage test.
