PAT Tester

A PAT tester is responsible for testing portable appliances and certifying that they are safe for use.

A PAT tester will first have to identify what class an appliance falls under. There are three different classes from which to choose from. Class 1 appliances are single insulated and contain an earth lead. Class 2 appliances comprise of double insulation, therefore an earth lead is not required. Class 3 appliances draw their power from sources lower than 50V. Class 1 & 2 are the most common form of appliances in circulation.

The PAT tester will then inspect power cabling ensuring that it is not damaged, contorted or exposed to the external environment.  Examination of the plug also occurs and if any damage is found on either the cabling or the plug at this stage the appliance is labelled hazardous.

You do not need special qualifications to become a PAT tester, any competent person is able to conduct PAT tests, though a tester hired from an external company will have a certificate, proving that they have been on a course related to PAT testing. As there is much confusion over what and how an appliance should be tested and in which class to place appliances, attending a PAT tester course is highly beneficial.
