PAT Testing Regulations

PAT Testing Regulations are in place to ensure that all portable electrical items within a property or workplace are fit for use. PAT Testing Regulations must be adhered to or those found in breach could face prosecution.

PAT Testing Regulations for the workplace include the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. These regulations combined provide specific legislation regulating the safety of electrical equipment. All businesses in which customers, employees or members of the public come into contact with portable appliances must conduct Portable Appliance Testing.

Landlords are also obliged under PAT Testing Regulations to conduct PAT testing on any electrical items that are connected to the mains. This includes appliances that may not be deemed portable such as fridges, freezers and stoves. Electrical safety in a rented property is governed under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994. Though regular PAT Testing is not a requirement, it is advised that landlords conduct testing at regular intervals to maintain high levels of electrical safety.

All tests must be carried out by a qualified tester or by a competent person, if not the PAT test becomes void.
