PAT

The process of examining a portable appliances electrical integrity is known as Portable Appliance Testing or PAT, though it is commonly referred to as PAT testing. PAT testing is an essential part of maintaining safety standards within a property or business.

Portable appliance tests usually involve a PAT tester conducting a thorough examination of an appliances power cable and plug. They will ensure that all cabling is intact and that both the plugs wiring and fuse are not faulty. The tester will then plug the appliance into a PAT machine that will analyse the integrity of the internal components. At this point the PAT machine will display a pass or fail indicator.

It is a legal requirement for all businesses to PAT test any appliance that an employee or member of the public will come into contact with. Regulations also require any equipment being leased or supplied and repaired or serviced be tested. Landlords are also obliged to obtain a PAT for all appliances that are connected to the mains supply including fridges, freezers, televisions and stoves. All tests must be carried out before tenants lease a property.
